Welcome to the Barnes Music Festival 2024
We are delighted to present our programme for this year’s Barnes Music Festival. Our theme is Legends, celebrating legendary music and legends of Barnes as well as music about legends. This includes marking the anniversaries of birth of two local legends: Gustav Holst’s 150th and Stephen Dodgson’s 100th. To coincide with these anniversaries, we are publishing a new edition of Elly Oldroyd’s Composers of Barnes.
There is a packed programme of 36 events over two weeks at venues across Barnes. We are pleased to welcome many musicians who are already legends including Dame Imogen Cooper, The Kanneh-Mason Trio, Pavel Kolesnikov and Nicholas Daniel.
We welcome back The Holst Singers, Henry Chandler & JP Ekins, Ben Parry with another Singalong and Lucy Parham with Patricia Hodge. Purcell’s King Arthur makes an appearance at St Michael’s. We have a special diversion to All Saint’s Putney for a concert celebrating their 150th anniversary. Other recitals include Madeleine Mitchell violin with Nigel Clayton piano, Daniel Moult organ, Mikeleiz-Zucchi saxophone/accordion duo, Laurence Williams and Jeremy Cole voice/organ duo, and the innovative Solem Quartet with the music of Steve Reich and Kate Bush. Our final concert is a Legends of Barnes Festival Gala at St Mary’s.
We are repeating the success of last year’s Toddlers Concert and are running an engaging Schools Programme with the theme, Gustav’s Great Galactic Adventure, as well as selecting this year’s Barnes Young Musician of the Year.
We are grateful to all our supporters especially our principal partner Chestertons, our major partner Russell-Cooke, to the Benefactors and Friends of Barnes Music Festival and above all to the musicians who share their music and their passion with us.
