Event Summary:
Musician in residence Ben Goldscheider (horn) and Giuseppe Guarrera (piano) present an exquisite evening of music, spanning centuries and genres. The programme begins with Beethoven’s innovative Sonata for Horn and Piano, Op. 17. Goldscheider brings his extraordinary virtuosity and expressive depth to the work, highlighting the spirited dialogue between horn and piano.
Brahms’ Four Serious Songs, Op. 121 follows, offering an introspective exploration of life and mortality. The first half concludes with Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, which moves from lyricism to joyful exuberance.
Contemporary work Nachtstück, by Mark Simpson, takes centre stage in the second half. The work embodies a night of darkness, which is charged with a nervous energy. Schumann returns with his evocative Drei Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, whose title was inspired by writings of E. T. A. Hoffmann. The composer appreciated Hoffmann’s sense of fantasy, and this work is full of melodic inventiveness and emotional depth.
Barnes Music Festival Patron Roxanna Panufnik’s Sonnets Without Words adds a modern touch, inspired by Shakespeare’s poetry, and filled with lyrical expression. The evening concludes with Eugène Bozza’s En Forêt, Op. 4, a dazzling showcase for the horn, capturing the spirit of the forest.

“It is a real honour for me to be the musician in residence at the Barnes Music Festival. Not only do I look forward to two special concerts, but having the chance to spend more time in Barnes with the Young Musician competition will make for a truly rewarding experience. Having the spotlight shone on the Horn in this way is a dream come true for me and I look forward to sharing all the wonderful music we are bringing to the audiences in Barnes!”
