All You Need Is Love – the story of popular music
Director Tony Palmer created this 17-hour documentary series broadcast worldwide in the 1970s covering many different genres of popular music. He brings to the Barnes Music Festival two of the most significant programmes showing the roots of popular music on Ragtime and The Beatles.
I Can Hypnotise ‘Dis Nation: Ragtime includes 1890’s film showing what the cakewalk was really like, extracts from Scott Joplin’s opera Treemonisha plus the ballet based on his Elite Syncopations, and rare film of Irving Berlin (Alexander’s Ragtime Band).
Mighty Good: The Beatles features the Cavern Club, The Beatles in Hamburg and their 1965 US tour, Summer of Love and the only time Paul McCartney sang Yesterday unaccompanied, specially for this film.
“A monumental achievement. Thank you” John Lennon
“The colossal emotional and intellectual range I doubt will ever be bettered” Pete Seeger
